CULT OF THE DEAD COW -- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ATHENS, TEXAS (AP)

Local authorities are on alert in Athens, Texas for cattle mutilation.

Members of the Cult of the Dead Cow (cDc), a self-proclaimed
"para-media" organization based in Lubbock, Texas, are reportedly at
large within the area. The cult's intentions remain unclear at this
time.

There has never been concrete proof linking the cDc and cattle
mutilation, but rumors are widespread.

The FBI alerted local authorities Monday to the cult's activities.
"Sure, we've had cattle mutilation here before - hasn't everybody? But
this time, we're ready," said J.P. McCall, deputy sheriff of Van Zandt
county. "Cattle owners can feel safe with us around."

Area ranchers expressed particular concern for their herds of black
cows. "With Halloween coming up, we're taking every precaution," said
John Stone, owner of the Circle T Ranch. "Beef prices are going up and
I can't afford to lose even one of my Angus bulls."

Law enforcement officials would not disclose exactly what measures were
being taken to ensure the safety of the herds.
